UCPN(Maoist) candidates urged to withdraw from poll race
NEPALGUNJ: The Mohan Baidya-led CPN-Maoist has urged UCPN (Maoist) candidates in writing to withdraw their candidacies in Banke district. The agitating CPN-Maoist cadres submitted a letter to UCPN (Maoist) party office in Nepalgunj. “We handed over the letter to Damodar Acharya, who is a UCPN (Maoist) candidate for constituency 3 of the district,” said IP Kharel, central committee member of CPN-Maoist. He said that his party has urged candidates of all parties to withdraw fro the poll race as it is “not in interest of Nepali people”.
CPN-M imposes far-west bandh to protest cadres’ arrest
DIPAYAL: Demanding release of its cadres arrested for obstructing roads, the CPN-Maoist has enforced shutdown in Seti and Mahakali zones on Sunday, throwing the normal life out of the gear. Police on Saturday had arrested four district-level CPN-Maoist leaders while they were attempting to prevent the scheduled visit of Unified CPN-Maoist Chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal to the region by obstructing the road. Issuing a press statement, the Seti-Mahakali State Committee of the party called for bandh today condemning the arrest. With the effect of general strike, the public transport has come to a grinding halt in far western districts.
CPN-M demanding donations from poll candidates
RUKUM, Oct 18: Poll candidates for the upcoming Constitution Assembly (CA) election are already strapped for cash and in search of possible source of funds for election campaigning. In addition, the parties also face threat from poll-opposing alliance led by the CPN-Maoist. Matters have turned worse for the parties with the CPN-Maoist led by Mohan Baidhya demanding donations from poll candidates.
CPN-Maoist has sent letters to poll candidates in the district demanding donations. So far, the CPN-Maoist has written to six election candidates under the first-past-the-post electoral system seeking donations. The demand ranges from Rs 50,000 to Rs 150,000. The candidates receiving letters are from Nepali Congress, UCPN (Maoist) and CPN-UML. The letters bear the signature of Manakamana, district secretary of the CPN-Maoist. Sher Bahadur KC, chief of the publicity department of CPN-Maoist in Rolpa district, said they have demanded Rs 150,000 from each election candidate from NC and UCPN (Maoist) and Rs 50,000 from CPN-UML candidates.
According to KC, letters demanding Rs 100,000 have been sent to UCPN (Maoist) candidate Ganeshman Pun and NC candidate Krishan Bahadur Rokaya, Rs 50,000 to CPN-UML candidate Khem Man Khadka. Similarly, in constituency 2 of the district, CPN-Maoist has demanded Rs 150,000 from UCPN (Maoist) candidate Janardan Sharma and NC candidate Gopal Jang Shah and Rs 50,000 from CPM-UML candidate Thagendra Prakash Puri. KC also informed that his party has not demanded donation from candidates who cannot afford it.
