Prisoners riot, hold and free hostages in Peru

RIOTING inmates seized at least 14 prison workers and later freed them, pressing demands to close the jail where they are held and to allow family visits, authorities said Wednesday. The inmates staged the riot at a prison in Challapalca in southern Peru late Tuesday, said Percy Castillo of the national ombudsman’s office. Authorities ended the standoff after three government prosecutors flew to the facility in the Andes. “We can now report that the problem has been solved. The people have been released. The situation is calm and under control,” said Attorney General Jose Pelaez Bardales. He did not give details about the negotiations to end the standoff, or any talks on prison conditions. — AFP
