Kenya: 115 Central Schools Closed Over Unrest

ABOUT 115 secondary schools in Central Kenya have been closed down this third term because of student unrest. Central PC Kiplimo Rugut said yesterday that the students were protesting the extension of the term by three weeks to recover the lost time after the teachers’ strike. He said wanted the schools closed to join their private schools counterparts. Speaking in Nyeri town, Rugut said some students destroyed property worth millions in the unrest while others abandoned classes and went home. “The most affected counties are Kirinyaga and Kiambu where most of the schools have been closed. Luckily, most of the students just walked away from their schools,” he said.
