KATHMANDU: CPN-Maoist Secretary Dev Prasad Gurung on Thursday has accused the government of breaching the doctrine of secularism by prioritising Dashain and Tihar festivals. Speaking at an interaction programme titled ‘Hindu Culture: Dashain and Dalit’ organised by Nepal Rastriya Dalit Mukti Morcha, Kathmandu in Reporters Club in the Capital, Secretary Gurung stated that the Hindu cultures are the representations of feudalism.
Maintaining that discrimination against Dalits is the outcome of the Hindu culture and religion, he stressed on the need to wage a cultural movement in the society to permanently wipe out the deep-rooted cultural subjugation. Coordinator of the Nepal Rastriya Dalit Mukti Morcha Tilak Pariyar said discrimination against Dalits will continue as long as the influence of Hindu religion prevails in the society, describing it as the main cause behind the Dalit woes.
Coordinator of the fifth conference of the Nepal Dalit Mukti Morcha Ranendra Baraili said Dashain and Tihar festivals do not bring about joy to Dalits instead they add to their woes from all spheres – socially, economically, culturally and religiously.
Noted progressive litterateur Khagendra Sangraula said the Maoist insurgency brought about a lot of changes to level the gaps between the high and low castes in the Nepali society and stressed on the need to wage war rather than rendering efforts in writing poems and stories to eliminate discrimination. Buddhi Nepali had presented a paper on the subject Hindu Culture: Dashain and Dalit while Vice Chairperson of Nepal Rastriya Dalit Mukti Morcha Teku Nepali, among others, had made comments on the paper.
