DEFYING the red rebels diktat today cost dear to the Panchyat Extension Officer (PEO) and five others. The CPI (Maoist) backed a group of tribal militia today abducted the PEO and others while the ‘palli sabha’ was on at Patkonda revenue village in Kangrukonda Gram Panchyat under Kalimela Block for ignoring their writ to skip the meetings being held under ‘Gram Sabha Shasktikaran programme’ from October 2 to 12 to identify the beneficiaries for different projects which are to be approved in Gram Sabha on !7 & 18 of this month.
About 30 militia members rushed to the meeting site at about 12.30 pm and asked the Panchyat functionaries to stop it. Then militia members asked the functionaries to follow them to a nearest hillside adjoining the jungle where they detained them for hours together, the locals said.
The Militia members later release all the hostages at about 4.00 pm after a issuing a fresh warning to them not to attend the palli sabha meetings. They also asked the abducted panchyat people to take up the Karkatpalli-Manyamkonda canal extension work with the government and district administration for an early commencement of the work. The panchyat functionaries have become frightened after the incident and a reign of fear prevails in the remote and interior regions across the rebels stronghold of Kalimela block. http://www.orissadiary.com/CurrentNews.asp?id=36890
