Naxal leader arrested in Navsari

SURAT: Special Operations Group (SOG) of Navsari police arrested Rajesh alias Pavan Dhanraj Rai, a sub-zonal area commander of Communist Party of India (Maoist) from Chikhli village of Navsari district on Wednesday. The accused was nabbed following a tip-off by Bihar police.

Two others have also been nabbed for providing local help to Rai in Gujarat. While Dhanaikumar Sahani of Muzaffarpur in Bihar was arrested for helping Rai get a job and a place to stay in Chikhli, Sanoj Sahani of Chhapra who is currently living in Dumas has been arrested for providing a mobile sim card to Rai. Sources said that Rai was wanted in around 25 crimes in Bihar and had come to Gujarat to go underground for a few months. He has been accused of engineering a bomb blast, murder, extortion and loot. He joined the Maoist group in 2005 and in 2009 he had carried out an IED blast in which six police personnel and a district magistrate were killed in Chhapra district.

“In early 2012, he torched a factory as his demand for ransom was not met,” said police inspector with SOG CJ Goswami. Police said that Rai was in-charge of the naxal activities in Saran, Muzaffarpur and Vaishali districts of Bihar. Investigations have revealed that he was not in touch with anyone in south Gujarat and had visited Surat just once to get the sim card.
