BERHAMPUR: Security personnel arrested two suspected Maoist supporters from Chhadakia jungle near Sonepur under Kandhmal district’s Daringibadi police limit on Sunday. At least seven country-made guns were seized from them.
The duo was nabbed during a massive combing operation conduced by security personnel including Special Operation Group (SOG), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) and police forces in Ganjam-Kandhamal border, police said on Monday. The arrested Maoist supporters were identified as Sarat Pradhan (21) and Masa Pradhan (19) of Chhadakia village, police said. Security personnel also seized landmines in soap boxes, a Maoist uniform, a cap, a ground-sheet, some tea and turmeric powder from Bahusara jungle under Daringibadi police station limit. Some of the explosives were disposed off by the BDS on the spot as it involved a risk to carry them, said additional SP (Kandhamal) Govinda Mallick.
It was the fourth incident of Maoist booty of such a scale being recovered in Kandhamal district in a month. At least 27 powerful improvised explosive devices (IED), landmines of different weights, at least 20 country-made hand grenades with detonators and safety fuse were seized from Srirampur jungle on September 24 last during raids.
The combing operation, involving around 500 security personnel, was conducted in the last three days along Ganjam and Kandhamal border, as it was suspected Maoists were using the area as their base. Police claimed to have destroyed several Maoist camps during the operation. The ultras, however, managed to escape from the camps, police said.
