Two members of the New People’s Army were killed and another was captured after a 45-minute firefight with government troops in Telafas Village, Columbio town in Sultan Kudarat Sunday.
Lt. Col. Alexis Bravo, commander of the Philippine Army’s 27th Infantry Batallion, said his men were responding to rebel sightings by civilians in Sitio Tiruray when the fighting broke out at around 3:20 a.m.
“The people [civilians] were already fed up with the lies and extortion activities of said criminal group,” said Bravo, who also challenged the human rights group Karapatan to look into rebel abuses.
The names of the two fallen rebels were not immediately known. The captured rebel, Renato Arema, was turned over to police custody. The military also retrieved two high-powered firearms from the rebels.
