Suspected Leftist Rebel Official Captured in C.Philippines

A suspected high-ranking official of the rebel group of the New People’s Army (NPA) was captured on Friday in central Philippines, police said Saturday.

Chief Superintendent Agrimero Cruz Jr., police director of Central Philippine region of Western Visayas, identified the suspect as Mateo Suarez, who is a 58-year-old resident of Banate town in Iloilo province of the region.

The police suspected that Suarez is the finance officer of the Komite Rehiyonal-Panay (Regional Committee-Panay) of the NPA, the officer said.

Suarez was arrested by virtue of warrant of arrest for murder with the use of unlicensed firearm, he said, adding that no bail bond was recommended for his temporary liberty.
