Soldier killed in Capiz clash

Philippines – Another Army trooper was killed in a clash with New People’s Army (NPA) fighters in Capiz, the military said.

Maj. Enrico Gil Ileto, the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division (3ID) spokesman, said soldiers from the 61st Battalion responding to a report on the presence of armed men at Barangay Tacayan, Tapaz town in Capiz engaged the insurgents around 6:30 a.m. on Saturday.

The encounter prompted the 61IB to conduct follow-on op erations against the NPA. One soldier was killed as a result of the incident.

Ileto said the almost platoon size of ground troops who figured in the encounter were led by Sgt. Jessie Silvestre and have been reinforced with additional forces for the pursuit operations.

The slain soldier was airlifted by a helicopter from the Philippine (PAF) Air Force Tactical Operations Group 6 (TOG6) to Roxas City. (Elena L. Aben)
