NPA rebel killed, 3 captured in Surigao clash

A New People’s Army rebel was killed and three others were captured in a clash with Philippine Army troops in San Miguel town in Surigao del Sur Wednesday morning.

The firefight occurred less than 10 hours after the insurgents burned P20 million worth of heavy equipment belonging to the Concepcion Basic Builders Inc.

At around 10:20 p.m. Tuesday, an NPA force belonging to the Guerilla Front 20 of the North Eastern Mindanao Committee swooped down on Poblacion village where Concepcion Basic Builders Inc. was renovating a bridge.

2nd Lt. Hazel Tabago, commanding officer of the 41st Civil Military Operations Battalion, said the rebels burned two dump trucks, a payloader, a backhoe, a generator with a welding machine, a crane, a concrete vibrator and a chainsaw.

Tabago said troops from the Army’s 36th Infantry Division were promptly deployed to pursue the insurgents.

Army troops caught up with about 15 rebels in the vicinity of Sitio Kiskis in Siagao village, also in San Miguel town, around 8 a.m. yesterday. A 30-minute firefight then ensued.

No one was reported killed or injured on the military side. On the other hand, along with the NPA casualties, an NPA sniper rifle with a scope was recovered after the fighting.
