BERHAMPUR: Eight persons were convicted for their involvement in Maoist activities by a court in Paralakhemundi on Wednesday. Each person was awarded seven years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 500 by S K Behera, chief judicial magistrate-cum-assistant sessions judge, Gajapati. Those sentenced are Jaccob Raita, Harsha Mandal, Bairagi Sabara, Surya Gamang, Gajinga Raita, Esha Mandal, Bhima Gamango and Alok Majhi of Anugura village within Udayagiri police limits.
They had been arrested on September 2006 from a church in their village and Maoist posters and literature were seized from them. They would file an appeal in district judge court challenging the verdict of the lower court, their advocate Upendra Nayak said.
