A SOLDIER was killed in a firefight against a group of New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in a remote village in the province of Zamboanga Sibugay, the military said Thursday.
The Army’s 1st Infantry Division reported that the clash broke out around 3:35 p.m. Wednesday in the village of Compostela, Buug, Zamboanga Sibugay.
The report said the gun battle broke out when the troops from the 53rd Infantry Battalion, who were on reconnaissance operation, chanced upon a group of NPAs in Compostela village, Buug town.
The NPAs were members of the NPAs Western Mindanao Regional Party Committee (WMRPC), the report said.
The firefight lasted for about 30 minutes that resulted to the death of a soldier while the NPAs were also believed to have suffered undetermined casualties, the report said.
The government troops launched a combat operation in pursuit of the NPA rebels who fled to the hinterlands of Buug town, the report added.
