Protests erupt after cops beat Tibetans

Hundreds of Tibetans demonstrated in northwest Qinghai province after police beat four people following a recent string of self-immolations in the region.

The protesters gathered outside police headquarters in Tongren county after officers dragged four Tibetans from a car, beat them and threatened them with guns, the London-based exile group Free Tibet said.

“The police appeared to be drunk, and beat the four men severely,” a witness was quoted as saying by US broadcaster Radio Free Asia.

The protests followed bloody clashes in neighboring Sichuan after two Tibetans set themselves on fire on Monday.
