CMs asks extremists to join mainstream; blasts in Manipur

Independence Day celebrations today passed off peacefully except in Manipur where four persons were injured in bomb blasts even as chief ministers asked extremists to join the mainstream.

Maoists in some areas of Odisha hoisted black flags while insurgent outfits in Tripura observed a ‘black day’.

Unmanned aerial Vehicles (UAVs) were used for surveillance for the first time in Jammu and Kashmir and mobile phone and internet services were shut down as part of the security drill to ensure peaceful celebrations in the Valley.

Official sources said in Imphal that the first explosion was reported from interior Thoubal district at a fair ground, near the district headquarters, at around 8 AM while arrangements were being made to celebrate the occasion.

Four persons were injured and taken to a nearby district hospital. Their condition was stated to be critical, the sources said.

Three more bombs exploded in the capital complex in Imphal while Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh was giving his speech at the 1st Manipur Rifles parade ground where the main function was taking place.
