Maoist leader arrested

Seeleru (Vizag): A Maoist leader was allegedly taken into custody by the Visakhapatnam rural police from Malkangiri in Odisha, a neighbouring district of Visakhapatnam, on Sunday. According to sources, Gopu Gopikrishna alias Sandesh alias Suryam, a division committee member (DCM) of Malkangiri, was taken into custody by the police. Sources said Suryam is being brought to Visakhapatnam. Suryam was reportedly involved in the Balimela ambush in which several Greyhounds personnel were killed.

Suryam, who is an in-charge of Matchkund area committee, has been playing an active role for the past three years at Onukudelli in Odisha, where the hydro power project is located. Suryam is the son of former state committee leader Gopu Sammi Reddy alias Jugal, who was arrested by the state police three years ago.

The Maoists have formed a committee and focused on the Bonda-Gupteswar area so that their cadres can travel without any hassles into Odisha and Chattisgarh.

He was looking after the committee affairs and was made a DCM. Earlier he was the commander of the Matchkund area squad.
