Police to curb Maoist efforts to observe ‘Martyrs’ Week’

Gadchiroli July 27 (PTI) The Gadchiroli police have geared up its machinery in view of the ‘martyrs’ week’ to be observed by Maoists between July 28 to August 3. “We are prepared to face any eventuality and the police force has been put on alert, said Gadchiroli Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohammed Suvez Haque. The police has also started an awareness campaign among the people about Maoist activities and have urged them to remain alert, the SP said. Elaborate arrangements have been made throughout the district to tackle the situation effectively, he added. Maoists began their preparations to observe martyrs’ week, with a propaganda campaign for the week-long annual event by circulating posters and displaying banners at different places all over the district, weel in advance. Through these posters, they appealed citizens to make ‘martyrs’ week’ successful by participating in the event. Maoists observe ‘martyrs’ week’ every year to honour their leaders and colleagues who were killed in different encounters, by constructing their memorials. They also try to involve common people in the event and also disrupt vehicular traffic, create hurdles on roads and ambushing police patrols. Meanwhile, all the 30 police officials in Korchi taluka of the district who had resigned en masse on July 11 withdraw their resignations today, a press release said. Office bearers of the Police Patil Association submitted a letter to the Sub Divisional Officer (SDO) of Kurkheda stating that they are taking back their resignations. The development comes in the wake of the July 18 meeting convened at Korchi by district authorities in which they requested the cops to withdraw their resignations, the release said.
