Maoist leader held in south Kolkata

The Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police on Thursday arrested a senior Maoist leader from the city. STF sources said Mohan Vishwakarma, 60, is a senior member of the Central Technical Committee and Technical Research and Arms Manufacturing (Tram) unit of the Maoist. Vishwakarma was picked up from Watgunj in south Kolkata early on Thursday.

“We have seized a hand grenade, Maoists literature and letters. Based on the information he gave us during interrogation, we conducted a raid at a workshop at Baranagar area and recovered 26 pieces of improvised hand grenades and eight unfinished parts of hand grenades. Moreover, we have also recovered 49 improvised hand grenades from a transport agency in Kidderpore area. The agency was assigned to deliver the consignment to Maoists in Jharkhand,” said a STF official.

STF sources confirmed that Vishwakarma, a resident of Bihar, used to take arms and ammunition to Jharkhand via Kolkata. He and his associates were also involved in procurement, manufacture and supply of improvised hand grenades, rocket launchers and fire arms.
