Maoist killed in alleged encounter

A cadre of Maoist Communist Party, Manipur (MCPM) was killed in a shoot out involving personnel of police commandos attached with Imphal West district police last night, around 8.30 pm at toubungkhok village in Imphal West district, police said Thursday.

The slain cadre was Thursday identified as Thongam Babu Singh (24) son of Th Ibohanbi Singh, Koirengei of Imphal East district by the family who had taken back the body after postmortem at RIMS morgue.

Police claimed that he was killed in an encounter between a team of Imphal West police commandos and a group of underground cadres intercepted when the police commandos rushed at Toubulkhok based on specific information were fired upon by some armed suspected undergrounds.

The cadre was killed when the police commandos retaliated the firing initiated by the armed persons. After a brief exchange of fire, others escaped taking advantage of the darkness, the police said, adding that a .32 pistol loaded with two live rounds, a hand grenade and one demand letter of MCPM were recovered from the possession of the slain cadres.
