RANCHI: After having hijacked trains twice in the state, the Maoists this time held up a goods train for around four hours near Hehegarha railway station on the Barkakana-Burwadih section, exposing the vulnerability of the route to Naxalite attack. The coal-laden train was intercepted around 1am on Saturday.
Latehar SP Kranti Kumar Garhdesi said after the goods train was intercepted the armed cadres of the rebel outfit snatched away the keys and mobile phones from the driver. “We rushed our forces to Hehegara but the station is not connected by road and encircled by forest. So by the time, the forces could have reached there, the train was released at 4.40am,” he said. Asked if any money was demanded from the driver or the guard of the goods train, Garhdesi said the Maoists sought details of the company that procured coal. The train was allowed to go after the driver assured to convey the Maoists’ message to the company for which the coal was being carried.
