Soldier killed, 3 hurt in NPA landmine attack

MANILA, Philippines – A soldier died and three others were wounded after their truck hit a landmine planted by New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in New Bataan town, Compostela Valley province on Friday night.

Lt. Col. Lyndon Paniza, Philippine Army’s 10th Infantry Division spokesperson, identified the fatality as Lt. Rodel Daguio. His remains are now at Villa Funeral Homes in Panabo City.

Wounded in the attack were Pfc. Richie Ursal of the 4th Scout Ranger Company and S/Sgt. Arnold Pacino and Cpl. Jaime Clara of the 1001st Infantry Brigade. They are undergoing treatment at the Montevista District Hospital.

Col. Paniza reported that “the landmine was laid on the concrete highway 100 meters away from the Iglesia ni Kristo church and about 300 meters from the school in New Bataan.”

He said the incident took place at about 11 p.m. in Barangay Bantacan, as the soldiers were on their way back to the headquarters of the 66th Infantry Battalion at New Bataan on board a military truck (KM-450).
