MANILA, Philippines – Two government soldiers were killed during a covert operation in the town of Guinobatan, Albay on Tuesday, a military official said.
Army spokesman Maj. Harold Cabunoc identified the fatalities as Private First Class (Pfc) Jayvi Villagomez and Pfc. Alfredo Leonillo Jr, both members of the Army’s 2nd Infantry Battalion.
Cabunoc said the soldiers were attacked around 12:50 a.m. by suspected members of the New People’s Army’s (NPA) Special Partisan Unit (SPARU).
“They were conducting covert security operation when they were shot from behind by members of the SPARU death squad,” said Cabunoc.
The military believes that the incident is linked to the arrest of Carlito Remamba alias “Ka Renan,” a SPARU member, in Ligao City last June 9.
Rebamba was arrested for murder and other charges.
Meanwhile, an NPA camp in Bobon town, Northern Samar was seized by government troops on Tuesday, according to Lt. Col. Noel Vistuir, commander of the Army’s 20th Infantry Battalion.
Vistuir also said the troops clashed with the rebels in Barangay E. Duran last June 7 and 8.
No casualties were reported on both sides.
