NAGPUR: Security forces recovered the body of the kidnapped village headman from Misipiri-Dhamditola Road in Deori Tehsil of Gondia on Wednesday. Ghanshyam Koretti, sarpanch of Istari village, was kidnapped on Monday evening from his residence.
Koretti was shot dead by the Naxals. The rebels took the responsibility of the murder through a hand-written pamphlet where they blamed Koretti for being police informer. Koretti’s body was found close to Gadchiroli-Gondia border. It is suspected to be the handiwork of Naxal’s Deori dalam.
Gondia’s Additional SP Vishwa Pansare confirming the information said that Koretti’s body was found around 10-km from his village. He had earlier said that the security forces have been deployed to retrieve the sarpanch.
Though police sources had earlier indicated the Koretti was a Naxal sympathizer as per their confidential reports, the rebels’ claim of the opposite has added a twist to the incident. There had been spurt in the incidents of Naxal violence in neighbouring Gadchiroli where the Naxals had been targeting village headmen and their deputies apart from the elected representatives of the civic bodies. Following their threat, several elected representatives from Etapalli and Bhamragarh division has already resigned from the post. The latest incident indicates that the Naxals are now turning their focus in Gondia too.
