3 NPA rebels killed in Sorsogon clash

MANILA, Philippines – Government troops killed 3 communist New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in a firefight in Donsol town, in Sorsogon early Tuesday morning, the military said.

The slain rebels were identified as Joel Ascutia, Christian Llagas, and Leopoldo Nebres.

Astucia is a former spokesman of the Condor-Piston Bicol, an organization of jeepney drivers and operators, according to Southern Luzon Command spokesman Col. Generoso Bolina.

The clash started when a group of around 15 rebels opened fire at soldiers who were approaching their encampment. A 30-minute firefight ensued.

“The soldiers outmaneuvered the rebels, forcing them to run for their lives, leaving behind three dead comrades,” said Lt. Col. Teody Toribio, commander of the Army’s 31st Infantry Battalion.

The soldiers overran the camp and recovered an M-16 rifle and a 9mm pistol in the area.

The NPA’s Celso Minguez  Command, in a press statement, confirmed the deaths of its 3 members.
