CAMP SIONGCO, Maguindanao — Communist rebels continued their attacks against paramilitary troops in villages in Bukidnon despite local efforts to establish peace and development in rural areas.
At dawn Tuesday, about seven New People’s Army (NPA) guerillas planted an improvised explosive device at a road in Lantapan, Bukidnon which exploded around 3 a.m. as several militiamen on board a mini-cargo truck, were conducting patrol, according to reports reaching the Eastern Mindanao Command.
One unidentified member of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) died in the attack.
Immediately after the blast, NPAs started shooting at government troops, triggering a brief firefight that lasted for about 10 minutes.
Another militiaman and truck driver were wounded.
Despite being outnumbered, the militiamen put up a fight that forced the rebels to retreat.
The CAFGU could not say whether the NPA also suffered casualties for they normally carry their wounded or slain comrade after a firefight. (PNA)
