100+ held for violent Greytown protest

Durban – More than 100 people were arrested for public violence during an illegal march in Greytown on Thursday morning, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

“About 132 people, including juveniles, were arrested during an illegal march between Muden and Greytown on the R74 Main Road at 02:00,” Captain Thulani Zwane said.

The residents are believed to have been marching over a lack of service delivery in the area.

The protesters allegedly blockaded the road with tyres, rocks, tyres and debris.

“There were no reports of violence, looting or damage to property,” Zwane said.

The situation had been stabilised and police were monitoring the area.

Motorists were advised to use the Pietermaritzburg Road, the R33 Dundee Road or the Mooi River N3 as alternative routes.
