Soldier killed in Bukidnon clash vs NPA

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) – A government soldier was killed in a clash between the military and suspected New People’s Army (NPA) guerillas in Malaybalay, Bukidnon on Monday afternoon.

Major Eugene Osias IV, spokesman of the Army’s 4th Infantry Division, identified the slain soldier as Private First Class Nelvin Alvarez.

Alvarez, who hailed from Malaybalay, died from a gunshot wound to his right chest.

Osias said members of the 43rd Division Reconaissance Company of the 403rd Infantry Battalion had an exchange of fire with some 20 suspected NPA guerillas at around 4 p.m. in Barangay Kibalabag.

Another soldier, identified as Corporal Joel Dumog, was injured in the clash. He sustained a gunshot wound to his left arm.

The rebels immediately fled the scene after the firefight
