Official: Bedouins, Egyptian police clash in Sinai

EL-ARISH, Egypt—An Egyptian security official says clashes have erupted between security forces and Bedouins in northern Sinai peninsula, leaving one Bedouin dead.

The clashes started late Thursday in the northern Sinai peninsula when police arrested a Bedouin on suspicion of theft. That prompted angry tribesmen to exchange gunfire with police while trying to storm the police station.

One Bedouin was killed and a police officer was injured, the official said.

The Bedouins also blocked a highway, burning tires to prevent cars from passing, he said. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters.
