2 soldiers killed in leftist rebel-attack in Cotabato

MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) – Two soldiers were killed in a landmine attack by suspected members of the Communist New People’ s Army (NPA) in the southern Philippine province of North Cotabato this morning, the military said.

Colonel Leopoldo Galon, spokesman of the military’s Eastern Command, said the two casualties were members of the 40th Infantry Battalion who were conducting combat operation when the rebels assaulted them in Buhay village in Makilala town at around 10:10 a. m.

The government troops have launched clearing and pursuit operation against the suspects, he said.
