Costa Rica reinforced custody at the Contraloria General de la Republica (Comptroller’s office) located in La Sabana after hundreds of farmers occupied the building urging respect for their rights on the land.
The protest started Tuesday, halting work at the Contraloria and forced its evacuation. The farmers on Wednesday said they would stay put until officials would attend to their needs, something that has not been occurring in their local communities.
President Laura Chinchilla was urged to guarantee that the state would halt pressures on the disputed land and demote Comptroller Rocio Aguilar and Vice Comptroller Martha Acosta. Both met with representatives of the social movement, farmers from around the country but never reached an agreement.
