Nearly 700 inmates in Thailand rebel against custodians

BANGKOK (Xinhua) — Almost 700 prisoners in a prison in southern Thailand’s Trang province early Monday rebelled against custodians, demanding for an immediate transfer of an austere custodian.

The uprising inmates started to burn their mattresses and beds, shatter glass windows with stones and bricks and hurt the custodians by rock slung with slingshot.

The inmates asked to have negotiation with the governor, demanding sudden removal of custodian whom they claimed was too strict on them.

In response to the riot, some 310 police officers armed with rifles were deployed around the prison and three fire trucks were prepared.
