MANILA, Philippines – Two communist rebels were killed by soldiers in a gunbattle in Quirino province, the military said on Monday.
Maj. Enrico Gil Ileto, spokesman of the Army’s 7th Infantry Division, said they are now trying to identify the slain New People’s Army (NPA) rebels through the help of local officials.
The armed encounter occurred between troops from the Army’s 48th Infantry Battalion and NPA rebels in Sitio Sibbagan, Barangay Landingan in Nagtipunan town.
Ileto said the military clashed with the same group of rebels last year.
“They have been on the run for several days now,” he added.
The military recovered 2 M16 rifles, an M14 rifle, an M79 grenade launcher, and various documents after the clash.
