Two people shot in slum demolition protest

Two people were shot and several others injured at Mukuru Kwa Njenga slum in Nairobi as residents protested demolition of their houses.

The men were among youth who engaged police in running battles for hours on Saturday in a bid to stop the demolition of the structures allegedly constructed on a private developer’s land.

Armed administration and regular police on Saturday morning stood vigil as the structures were brought down catching residents unawares.

Police lobbed tear gas canisters at the youth who ganged up to stop the demolition and the men were shot during the confrontation.

Embakasi OCPD Otieno Okello said the youth started pelting police with stones forcing the law enforcers to disperse them.

“The police acted in self defence as they youth became rowdy,” he said and added that they were enforcing a court order
