At least 13 police personnel, including a sub inspector, were killed and two injured after the naxals of the CPI-Maoist triggered a landmine blast blowing a police van in Jharkhand’s Garhwa district on Saturday.

The incident took place in the Bariganwa forest in the

“Thirteen policemen were killed and two policemen were injured in the blast,” Director General of Police GS Rath said.

The personnel killed in the blast were part of an escort party to the Bhandari block development officer, who was going to meet villagers.

According to the police, the blast was followed by a fierce encounter between the security forces and the rebels. The police headquarters in Ranchi has sent reinforcements to bail out the exhausted forces stuck in the jungle.

“The block officer is safe. A relief team as been sent to the place of action,” said the DIG. Injured jawans are being sent for hospitals by road and helicopter he added.

According to sources in Bhandaria police station, about 50 Maoists waiting for the police party triggered the blast around 11 am.
