3 SC officers injured in prison disturbance

RIDGEVILLE — Authorities say three corrections officers were taken to a hospital after an inmate disturbance at a state prison outside Ridgeville.

Authorities said two officers were taken to the hospital Wednesday night and a third early Thursday. None of the injuries appeared to be life threatening.

Charleston television stations report police and corrections officials moved into the dorm at Lieber Correctional Institution using tear gas to restore order early Thursday. At one point there about 200 outside law officers at the prison.

Corrections department spokesman Clark Newsom had said the dorm was put on lockdown after inmates subdued a correctional officer, taking his keys and radio Wednesday night.

Newsom did not immediately return messages Thursday about how the situation was resolved.
