Inmates of El Rodeo I jail join prison protests in Venezuela

At least 900 inmates at El Rodeo I prison joined a protest taking place in five prisons nationwide in Venezuela, according to information provided by the director of non-governmental organization A Window to Freedom, Carlos Nieto Palma.

Since 31 December, the relatives of prisoners in Yare I and Yare II prisons invaded both jails as a way to reject prisoners’ poor conditions. On Saturday, 680 people were kept against their will in Los Teques detention center while they visited their relatives.

On Monday afternoon, the inmates of the Coro town detention center went on a hunger strike. On Tuesday morning, the inmates of La Planta prison evicted the staff and have taken over control of the jail.

Now, inmates at El Rodeo I jail announced a hunger strike in solidarity with other protests.
