Students caught in protest for better Santa Flora roads

Commercial activities and schools were affected yesterday as scores of angry protesters staged a fiery protest on the SS Erin Road yesterday. Approximately ten roads were blocked from Siparia to Erin as residents and taxi drivers burnt tyres, logs and old furniture, cutting off access from Point Fortin and Fyzabad. Residents said until Works and Infrastructure Minister Jack Warner meets with them their action would continue. They said Member of Parliament for the area, Chandresh Sharma, had promised them new roads. However, they claimed, nothing had been done so far. Workers at Petrotrin Santa Flora and students of the Siparia East and West Secondary Schools were caught in the protest. Police had to assist children of the Siparia East Secondary to their school. A party of officers, led by ASP Rajkumar, Insp Seedarie and Sgt Granger, visited the blocked roads. No incidents of violence were reported.
