Squatters announce protest against eviction order

KATHMANDU: An organisation of squatters has announced a series of protests against the government decision to evict squatters from the river banks in the valley.

Organising a press meet today, the National Squatters’ Forum said the landless people will start their protests tomorrow and enforce a nationwide general strike against the government on January 17.

As part of their programmes, the landless will gherao the Office of the Prime Minister, stage rallies displaying empty dishes and spoons, hold interactions with journalist on their problems and stage torch rallies.

Speaking on the occasion, chairman of the organisation Padam Devkota blamed Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai for acting against squatters and demanded that the government withdraw the decision to drive out squatters from the river banks.

He underscored the need to form a powerful commission to settle the squatters and sort out other problems plaguing them.

Last month, Minister for Land Reforms and Management Bhim Prasad Gautam had made a strong promise to make alternative arrangements for the squatters living on the river banks in the valley.

Most of the valley-based squatters have been living on the banks of the Bagmati, Bishnumati, Manohara, Hanumante and Dhobikhola rivers.
