LUCKNOW: Sonbhadra police on Thursday arrested a Naxal couple carrying a cash reward of over Rs 40,000.
The duo were arrested from Ujiyari Tola in Manchi police circle of the district. Police recovered a .32 bore revolver and live cartridges from them.
Additional director general (ADG) Crime and Law & Order Subesh Kumar Singh said the arrested couple include a former sub-zonal commander of Sonachal sub-zonal committee Jaikaran alias Ashok and his wife, perhaps the commander of a women Naxal wing.
Police said Jaikaran was wanted in connection with a 2001 Naxal attack at a PAC camp in Mirzapur. During the attack, led by Jaikaran, Naxals had looted 13 self loading rifles (SLRs) and hundreds of live cartridges.
They torched the camp before escaping. Over a dozen PAC jawans and civilians were injured in the attack.
A cash reward of Rs 13,000 was declared on jaikaran after the attack.
Jaikaran is also facing a murder case. He had allegedly murdered Ramashanker Jaiswal of Rampur village in Sonbhadra in 1997.
In another incident, he was accused of robbing two single barrel guns in Sonbhadra in separate incidents.
He is also accused of leading the Naxal teams which set Tendu leaves on fire when the cultivators and leave pickers refused to pay a cut to the Naxals. While Jaikaran has 14 criminal cases pending against him, including those of murder and robbery, his wife is wanted in six criminal cases in Sonbhadra and adjoining districts. Jaikaran’s wife, police said, is the sister of dreaded Naxal leader Lalvrat Kole alias Rajguru alias Kamal of Jhariyawan village in Naugarh police circle of the district.
After she managed to escape in repeated encounters, police had declared a cash reward of Rs 30,000 on her.
