Villagers caned during public hearing

ONGOLE: Police resorted to lathicharge on villagers, who had gathered in large numbers opposing the proposal to permit iron ore mining at Marlapadu in Tangutur mandal of Prakasam district on Saturday.

One villager fell unconscious while four others were injured in the incident. The public hearing that was planned at the place was put off because of the turn of events.

The APMDC had announced a public hearing on the proposal to allow iron ore mining in Konijedu, Marlapadu, Kaduluru and Erajarla villages. The villagers who were opposing the proposal put up tents at the place to lodge their protest. The police, however, removed the tents provoking the villagers.

The angry villagers also thrashed some people from outside the villages who had come to attend the hearing. The police swung into action and resorted to a lathicharge.With the situation turning violent, senior officials from the district collectorate had to beat a hasty retreat from the place.
