PATNA: Hundreds of street vendors participated in a protest rally here on Tuesday against forceful eviction from their slums by the district administration and depriving them of their livelihood. The protesters alleged that the administration was acting arbitrarily while not providing any other alternative. The rally was organized under the aegis of Ashray Abhiyan, an initiative of Jan Kalyan Gramin Vikas Samiti.
Several street vendors from areas like Kargil Chowk, Anta Ghat, Biscomaun Bhawan, Bhattacharya Road, Exhibition Road, Station Road, Buddha Park, Rajapul, Kurji, Sabzibagh, Bazar Samiti and Khetan market took part in the rally.
Sugambar Paswan of Ashray Abhiyan said the organization for the last seven years is trying to make the government aware of the problems faced by the slum dwellers and street vendors and claimed that the rally was a big success.
Ashray Abhiyan secretary Doroth Fernandez said the poor were feeling upset and victimized as their habitats were being demolished in the name of development. “Our demand include stoppage of the eviction drive without providing alternate arrangements, construction of housing units for slum dwellers under the NURUM Yojana and distribution of gair-mazarua land to the landless,” Fernandez said
The rally ended at R Block roundabout with a memorandum submitted to the state government in this regard.
