Maoists arrested planting landmines

KORAPUT: Two Maoists were arrested while trying to plant landmines on a road in Rayagada district. Explosives were recovered from the possession of the accused, Prasanta Gulurika and Billura Brekawada. Police said following a tip-off that Maoists are planting explosives on Chandrapur-Dangosorada road within Chandrapur police limits on Sunday night, the operation was chalked out.

“We came to know that Red rebels were planting landmines on Chandrapur-Dangosorada road targeting security personnel. Two Maoists were arrested while they were trying to plant landmines and explosives have been seized from them. No exchange of fire took place,” said SDPO Bissamkatak R Prakash.

Police recovered two landmines, four electronic detonators and a few metres of live wire, Maoist posters, banners and handwritten letters from the rebel’s possession.

Going with the interrogation of the arrested Maoists, the police officer said, “They joined the Maoist organization five years ago and are armed cadres. They were close associates of Maoist leader Azad and Nikhil and belong to the Basadhara division of the CPI (Maoist).” Police have intensified search operation in and around Chandrapur on Monday.

“Though they have confessed that they have not planted any explosives prior to their arrest, we can’t be complacent. We can’t take a chance. Search operation is on the Chandrapur-Dangosorada road to detect explosives,” the SDPO said.
