Farmers protest enters fourth day, essential services hit

Amritsar, Dec 9 (PTI) Essential services like the supply of petrol and LPG remained affected in the district as the agitation of Punjab farmers entered the fourth day today. Farmers have blocked the Amritsar-Delhi national highway at Beas to demand waiver of debt and power bills. Besides waiver of debt and power bills, the farmers have also been demanding subsidy on power and water supply, tube- well connections to farmers with less than four acres of land, Amritsar (Rural) SSP Gurmit Chouhan said. As the highway has been blocked, traffic is being diverted through link roads from Gurdaspur and Kapurthala, he said. Senior police officers, including DIG and IG, visited the affected areas to take stock of the situation. Seventeen agitating farmer organisations have blocked the national highway at Beas. The agitating farmers, who have set up tents in the area, have been not allowing any vehicle to pass through the area.
