All quiet after violent North West protest

Johannesburg – The situation was quiet in Ledig on Monday after residents embarked on a violent protest over the weekend, North West police said.

“We are still monitoring the situation, but there is currently no picketing,” Brigadier Sikhumbuzo Ngubane said.

On Sunday afternoon, a group of about 300 people gathered at the village’s tribal offices near Sun City to voice concern about corruption and maladministration, said Ngubane.

The group started throwing stones at the police, who had been called to the scene, and at the security guards guarding the property, he said.

“Shelters next to the tribal offices were petrol bombed.”

Police contained the situation and the group retreated to their village where they blockaded roads with rocks and burning tyres, said Ngubane.

Four people, who were arrested for public violence on Sunday, would appear in the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
