Nov 03, 2011 (Nairobi Star/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) — Workers at a bulk liquid storage company in Mombasa have been on strike for the two days protesting against the termination from employment of their 19 colleagues.
The East African Storage Company workers began their strike on Tuesday after they learnt that 19 of their colleagues had their contracts terminated. “We don’t know exactly why their contracts were terminated but the reports we are getting state that they were laid off for joining the union,” said one of the permanent workers who sought anonymity for fear of victimization.
Kenya Union of Commercial Food and Allied Workers Mombasa branch secretary Samuel Baya said the 19 were sacked because of joining the union. Baya accused the management of the company of going against a recognition agreement they had with the company.
