GAYA: The security forces comprising the district police, STF, CRPF and COBRA launched a major offensive against the Maoists in the Naxal-affected Dumaria-Imamganj region in Gaya district following spurt in Naxal violence including target killings in which several persons including a former mukhiya, a sitting mukhiya’s son and several others were killed and damage was also caused to the movable and immovable property of those on the Maoist hit list.
The operation, which began on Saturday paid dividends on Sunday as the security forces succeeded in destroying Maoist bases in the Lutua forest, the favourite hideout of the Naxals. Magadh Range DIG Naiyyer Hasnain Khan said that nearly 5,000 rounds of live ammunition, items used in landmine laying etc had been seized by the police forces. No less important, according to the DIG, was the destruction of the logistical support base that sustained the Maoists in the comparatively safe hideouts in the forests near the Bihar-Jharkhand border. The police forces have also seized items like gas cylinders, health kit, medicine, cots and other provisions possessed by the Maoists.
The police forces are now following leads gathered during the successful operation in the forests and the operation was on to give the Maoists a run for their money. The SSP was camping in the area and the operation will continue, said the DIG. Places of rest as well as strategy making of Maoists have been destroyed, said Khan.
