Rebels torch Japanese firm’s container van in Cotabato

MANILA, Philippines – Suspected New People’s Army (NPA) guerillas torched a container van owned by Japanese firm Sumitomo Fruits Corp. (Sumifru) in Makilala town, North Cotabato province, on Thursday night.

Police spokesman Chief Superintendent Agrimero Cruz Jr. said four NPA members flagged down the vehicle along the national highway of Barangay Kisante around 8:45 p.m.

The rebels attacked Sumifru’s compound in Compostela Valley last week and burned the company’s heavy equipment and vehicles.

Police are pursuing the rebels.
