Powerful landmine found in Midnapore

Midnapore (WB), Oct 28 (PTI) A powerful directional landmine was today seized by the joint forces in Maoist-hit Jhitka jungle en route to Lalgarh in West Midnapore district where ruling Trinamool Congress MP Subhendu Adhikary was to attend a programme. The joint forces on patrol noticed fuse wire on the road in the Jhitka forest between Pirakata and Bhimpur and immediately began a search which led to the discovery of the landmine, police sources said. The police cordoned off the area and the bomb squad defused the landmine. The MP, who was to distribute clothes to the poor at Lalgarh, curtailed his programme to 15 minutes and was escorted out by the joint forces, the sources added. The seven-day deadline given to Maoists in junglemahal to lay down arms by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had expired on October 22, when the Maoists had called a bandh in defiance, which had little impact.
