LIMA – A soldier died in an attack by guerrillas in the southern region of Ayacucho, the Peruvian armed forces joint command said Tuesday.
Sgt. Moises Vasquez Uchicapi was killed Sunday by a shot to the head while on a patrol in the Llochegua district, the military said in a statement.
The joint command expressed its “most heartfelt condolences” to the sergeant’s family and said an intense search for the attackers was under way.
The incident took place near the Valley of the Apurimac and Ene rivers, or VRAE, region, a broad swath of jungle highlands that Peruvian officials say have become redoubts for Shining Path guerrillas now working as hired guns for drug traffickers.
