LOHARDAGA: The Gram Vikas Sangharsh Samiti, a committee of villagers of four panchayats, including Bagru, on Tuesday started an indefinite economic blockade on the Bagru-Lohardaga road accusing Hindalco of neglecting community development programmes.
Hindalco is the leading bauxite company among the mine lessees in the area.
Villagers, including women, took a vow not to allow the 100 bauxite trucks plying on the route.
They also decided to stop transport of bauxite by ropeway from Bagaru hill to the unloading station in Lohardaga town. Samiti chief Manir Oraon and vice-chairman of Lohardaga District Council said the bauxite company had never been concerned about the people in its mining areas.
“There are no roads and villagers have to walk miles to avail themselves of health facilities. There is no education programme for the youths in the area. The economic blockade will continue till the three demands are met,” he said.
